Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. The floating holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, though the act predated the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by 15 years.
King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

The First Family left the White House at 7:50 p.m. for the unannounced visit to the memorial near the National Mall. The family was back at the White House by 8:20 p.m.
Obama delivered a speech at the Sunday morning dedication.

President Obama talked about King's legacy in a January, 2010 King Day address. "May the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King continue to inspire us," he said.

This is what passes for dinner table conversation in the Obama White House:Sasha wants Scott. So does Malia. The first lady wants Beth. So does President Obama.

Michelle Obama revealed the tongue-in-cheek family feud as she paid a visit to Secret Service headquarters on Wednesday to thank workers at the agency that, among its many duties, protects the first family.

"People always ask what it is like to have Secret Service around," Mrs. Obama said. "It's like having family around. ... We have a fight among our family over who's getting which people.

"Sasha will come in, it's like, 'You took Scott!'" Mrs. Obama said. "Malia's like, 'You took Scott? That's not fair!' And then I'll say the same thing to Barack. It's like, 'Why did you get Beth?' It's dinner table conversation."

Mrs. Obama said a good relationship with the agents is important "when you're trying to live a normal life and raise a couple of girls in the White House."

The president, in an interview with ABC News this week, said it's a challenge to give his daughters plenty of "space to make mistakes, be teenagers" while also ensuring they're protected.

"They're still going to the mall. And they're still going to movies. But they've got this guy with a gun following them around," Obama said. "Our Secret Service detail is terrific about it. But it's a balance that has to be struck."

Today, many events nationwide mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Some call it a "National Day of Service and Remembrance" and others use the term "Patriot Day," although some form of the date - like 9/11 - is most widely recognized.

I was almost three years old, and my sister Kaila was just 14 months old (1 year and 2 months). We hope and pray this tragedy will never happen again!

The younger Miss Obama and her sister, Malia Obama, and several friends had a birthday party at the original Georgetown Cupcake location on Prospect Street in Georgetown (which is now used as their television studio for their show, "DC Cupcakes"). The owners of the cupcakery were on hand for the party, and we imagine that decorating cupcakes was on the agenda. Last year, Sasha had her birthday party at California Pizza Kitchen.

Obama decided on his new career path during a trip to Memphis, Tenn., to deliver the commencement address at Booker T. Washington High School. The principal’s daughter told Obama she decided not to go to her mom’s school because she was worried boys would be afraid to talk to her with her mom lurking in the halls.

The president liked the idea so much, he joked to the students that his next job will be principal at his daughters’ high school.

Obama added: “And then president of their college.”

We were so excited to watch President Obama at school today. The graduates from Booker T. Washington High School got a chance to shake the president's hand. Awesome! Although we wanted to see Malia and Sasha's dad, we understood we could not get tickets because it was strictly for the graduates, their parents, and the faculty and staff of BTW. We are so glad President Obama chose Memphis.

Guess what? Our grandpapa Chuck got a chance to meet the secret service staff, and also saw President Obama because he helped with security at the Cook Convention Center. We have a graduation ticket and a program that Grandpapa Chuck brought home.

This year's theme “Get Up and Go!” focused on promoting health and wellness, a central part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids. Easter Sunday is considered the most important Christian holiday. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his death. It is popularly celebrated with egg hunting and toy bunny rabbits. Easter Sunday is Sunday, April 12, 2009 this year. Easter Sunday is preceded by the season of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and repentence culminating in Holy Week, and followed by a 50-day Easter Season that stretches from Easter to Pentecost.

Chocolate and candy eggs have become popular in this century, but exchanging of eggs in the springtime is an ancient custom. Egyptians buried eggs in their tombs. The Greeks placed eggs on their tombs. A Roman proverb states, "All life comes from an egg". In most cultures, the egg signifies birth and resurrection. So when the church began to celebrate the Resurrection in the second century, the egg was a popular symbol.

The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. The bunny as an Easter symbol seems to have it's origins in Germany, where it was first mentioned in German writings in the 1500s. The first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany during the early 1800s. The first bunnies were not made of chocolate; they were made of pastry and sugar.

We believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was resurrected, and we will be with Him for eternity!

During a recent appearance on The View, Michelle Obama spoke candidly about her girls:

We do a lot of talking. Sometimes it's too much. After our military families tour, I came in, it was 10:30 at night, we were beat. We did four cities in two days, and Malia's like, 'Ma, I need to talk to you.' And we talked, and we talked. We talked about make-up, actually."

Malia and Sasha are also daddy's girls. President Barack Obama may remain cool and composed when confronted with issues like Gaddafi, the Tea Party and even global warming. But he can get downright choked up when he thinks about his daughters growing up. Michelle says:

He says he's cool, but you know the first time Malia went out for a party and she was dressed—she had her hair done and she's tall, she had on a pretty dress—you could see him. He was sort of like...gulp. And I was like, 'Easy dad.'

Stand Up For Kids

The mission of StandUp For Kids is to help homeless and street kids.

They do this every day in cities across America. They carry out their mission through their volunteers who go to the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives.

StandUp For Kids is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization was founded in 1990 to help rescue homeless and at-risk youth. With national headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, StandUp For Kids is run almost entirely by volunteers, and has programs in a number of states.

Tiara Tea Society

Tiara Tea Society was founded by Eva Lynn Bishop and Marie Pizano-Firtik in 2006. While pursuing philanthropic endeavors together, the two jokingly reminisced about being little girls who dressed up in their mother’s old clothes and had a tea party. Why not do it again?! Thus the society was born.
But, there had to be a higher purpose for the Tiara Tea Society. First, is to remember the “little girl” in all of us women.

More poignant though, is the reality a little girl’s life is not always about playing “dress-up”. It is much more difficult in today’s world to maintain the innocence of such childish fun.

The founders made the decision that the focus of the Tiara Tea Society is to be of service to one little girl each year. In 2007 the society selected its first little girl, Morgan Shaw, as the honoree and raised funds for The Morgan Shaw Benefit Fund.

Since then the society has worked with various relief organizations to improve the lives of children around the world one little girl at a time.

Tiara Tea Society is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.

The ladies of the Tiara Tea Society honored the pretty young girl in the pink dress, who was wearing a pink bow in her hair and a pink bracelet circling her wrist.

We can't believe this year has gone by so fast! It is time for the Easter Egg Roll at the White House. This year it will be held inside the White House! Awesome! We will never forget the time we spent in Washington, D.C. We did not get a chance to meet Malia and Sasha, but we enjoyed seeing Justin Bieber and all of the activities. We want to thank Congressman Steve Cohen again for giving us his tickets.

In Memory of Dr. Betty J. Cooper

It saddens me to inform you of the death of my friend, Dr. Betty J. Cooper who passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011. Dr. Cooper edited Kailysia and Kaila's book entitled Our Journey with Radiance and Rosebud.

Dr. Betty J. Cooper was dedicated and had a great passion and flair for writing. Her commitment was extraordinary. Dr. Cooper was my coworker, for a brief time she was my administrator, she was my mentor, my business partner, and she was my good friend. I am going to miss her dearly.

So I leave this poem:

Her articles were written with serious thought
They just flowed from her pen in a flash!
Wild inspiration, straight onto the paper
With a period, a colon and a dash.

Grammar and style was quite important to her
For the result of her work was a tale of delight
A great editor she was ~ there's no doubt.

She had a love for the English Language,
Dr. Cooper wanted articles to be concise
with words meaningful and precise,
She did not rest until everything was decent and in order.

I believe God said to Dr. Cooper
You have diligently edited and proofread every fine line:
that’s enough!
You have guarded every comma and apostrophe; time out!
Your zeal for grammar and punctuation is coming to an end
It is time for you to use your pen less frequently.

To the Cooper family, her red pen has retired gracefully, but her spirit, her smile and laughter will live on within our hearts.

Motown music in honor of Black History Month

The White House hosted a night of Motown music in honor of Black History Month last night, and First Tween Sasha Obama helped to dance the night away. Video of the event is available from ABC News.

Stars who performed tributes to Motown greats included Nick Jonas (himself no stranger to the Obamas), Natasha Bedingfield, Sheryl Crow, Jordin Sparks, John Legend, and Amber Riley and Matt Salling from the cast of Glee. The President took a great deal of ribbing about his own stiff dance style from emcee Jamie Foxx, but he took it good-naturedly and danced with young Ms. Obama on the stage during "Dancing in the Streets."
As part of the First Lady's new initiative, "The Sound of Young America", Michelle Obama invited 100 local students in Washington to attend an educational workshop at the White House on the history of Motown.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's daughters Malia and Sasha won't be on Facebook anytime soon, First Lady Michelle Obama said Wednesday.

"I'm not a big fan of young kids having Facebook. It's not something they need. It's not necessary," Obama told the NBC Today Show, revealing that neither girl has been allowed to create an account.

Facebook officially has a lower age limit of 13 for its users, but kids who are much younger frequently register for accounts at the popular website by simply lying about their age when they sign up.

As to whether her kids will be allowed to sign up for accounts in the future, the first lady said: "It depends on when we leave (the White House) and how old they are."

Benz, known for his ability to make unlikely color and pattern combinations look sophisticated, tweeted that Malia looked “sweet and sparkly” in his tank top and skirt, both pieces from his spring/summer 2010 collection. The fact that he tweeted about the dress well after the fact signals that he didn’t know she’d be wearing his dress.

President Barack Obama's nine-year-old daughter, Sasha, wanted to test her developing Chinese skills this week while Hu Jintao was in town.

Just whom did she want to practice them with?
The Chinese president himself, according to a White House official who recounted the story on Thursday after a formal state dinner the previous night.
"The president pointed out last night at the state dinner that his daughter, Sasha, is a very young girl but her class is studying Chinese," Ben Rhodes, a White House deputy national security adviser, told a video conference with Chinese bloggers.
"She's under 10 years old and they're studying Chinese, and she wanted to have the chance to practice her Chinese with President Hu."

Sasha attended Hu's welcoming ceremony on the White House lawn on Wednesday morning with friends and could be seen waving a Chinese flag excitedly as her father and Hu walked around the grounds.

The two presidents paused to visit when they reached the nine-year-old and her friends behind the rope line.
"Not every (child) has the opportunity to try out their first phrases of Chinese with the president of China, but she had that chance," Rhodes said.

He said the anecdote illustrated Americans' desire to get to know China better with more people studying the country and doing business there.

Malia and Sasha on Martin Luther King Day

President Obama took his family to a local middle school to participate in a painting project to help celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, calling attention to service projects around the nation in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia and Sasha, went to Stuart Hobson Middle School in Washington where they met mentors and the young people they were helping with different projects. It is Mrs. Obama’s 47th birthday, and she was greeted with a lively rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
The Obamas helped paint apple characters in the cafeteria to encourage healthy eating.

Obama, wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha spent several hours Saturday at Pyramid Rock, a secluded beach at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The first family then hit the tennis courts at Kailua Racquet Club, a private club near the neighborhood where the Obamas are renting a luxurious oceanfront home.

The Obamas are scheduled to leave Hawaii late Monday, arriving in Washington the following day.

The First Family and their friends stopped by a Windward Oahu shop for some shave ice.

At 4:15 p.m., the presidential motorcade parked in front of the Island Snow shop in Kailua which is a few miles from the Obamas vacation rental home.

President Obama, Malia and Sasha, and more than a dozen other adults and children enjoyed the sweet treat.

Sasha got a yellow and red shave ice cup while Malia got a tropical blue one.

The group ate their shave ice in the parking lot in front of Island Snow and left at 4:40 p.m.

President Barack Obama arrived late Wednesday in Hawaii to join his family for Christmas vacation.

Christmas vacation in Hawaii is a tradition for the Obama family. The president was born there in 1961 and lived in Hawaii until he was 18, except for a period in Indonesia from the age of six to 10.

No public events are scheduled, though Obama is expected to hit the beach and play golf, and perhaps take time to visit a US Marine base on the island.

Last night on TNT the Christmas in Washington special brought out the tribute to the season. The event, held at the National Building Museum was presented by the first family, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and had a string of performance that were breathtaking including Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, and Matthew Morrison.

However, the moment that could have stole the show was Malia Obama’s giggling. Trying to hold it in, the President did seem to crack a smile,

Exactly what happened wasn’t mentioned and there were no camera angles to capture what might have been so cute at one of the biggest holiday events in Washington, DC. While we are disappointed, it is not because of Malia or those on stage, it is because America wasn’t let in on the joke.

The smiles from the stage were big, beautiful and genuine. It was a moment away from the politics and placed on the family.

Malia and Sasha are headed to Hawaii for Christmas

HONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama's Hawaii vacation is being delayed by unfinished business in Washington, but first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha are going ahead with their trip this weekend.

A statement from Michelle Obama's office Friday said the rest of the family — including the first dog, Bo — will depart for Honolulu on Saturday as originally scheduled for the holidays.

The president won't fly to Hawaii until Congress' session is complete, possibly on Wednesday.

The family won't take Air Force One, instead flying on a C40B, a version of the Boeing 737 that the first lady's office described as one of the White House fleet's smaller and most efficient planes.

The entire Obama family will return to Washington on Jan. 1.

I will be buying my granddaughters a few books for Christmas. They definitely want President Obama's book Of Thee I Sing A Letter To My Daughters, which he dedicated to Malia and Sasha. I'm going to surprise them with another book entitled I'm Changing: Friendships, Drama, and Oh...The Comma! by Starlet Reid. Kailysia is in her first year of middle school and Kaila will be starting middle school next year. If you have any girls in your family starting middle school/junior high, I'm quite sure they will enjoy this book.

Starlet Reid taught middle school for five years. Her book is based on her expreriences as a young girl and a teacher.

"Simple Gifts" at the White House Christmas

A larger-than-life version of President Barack Obama's dog, made of 40,000 twisted black and white pipe cleaners, is one of the first things tourists and other guests will see when they stroll through White House halls all decked out for the holidays.
The 2-year-old Portuguese water dog features prominently in the 350-pound, white chocolate-covered gingerbread White House. A version of the furry pooch, made from almond paste, sits on the edible grounds near a replica of Michelle Obama's fruit and vegetable garden.

"This year, Bo has taken on increased importance in the house so we made him a little bigger," White House pastry chef Bill Yosses told reporters Wednesday during a preview of the holiday decorations. His fingers were still stained black from sculpting the mini Bo.
Bo joined Obama, Mrs. Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha in signing the family's Christmas card _ with a paw print.

Guests can also take a bite out of Bo _ the Christmas cookie variety.

The first lady held an open house Wednesday for children of parents on active duty or reserve status in the Marine Corps. They and their parents, in their dress blues, were the first guests to see the White House in its holiday glory, Mrs. Obama said.

Yosses, chef Cristeta Comerford, florist Laura Dowling and other staffers later led the kids down the Christmas tree-lined hall to the State Dining Room, where they learned how to ice gingerbread cookies, use fruit and vegetables stamps to decorate a card, and make magazine trees.

Mrs. Obama joined the hands-on activity. She decorated a cookie and a card and sampled a cookie one of the kids gave her.

She described the pipe cleaner version of Bo as "pretty, pretty shocking. But it's very cool and he's very soft."

Mrs. Obama settled on the theme of "Simple Gifts" for her second holiday season as first lady, emphasizing what she says are the simple things that bring joy at Christmas time, such as music, children, friends and family, and gifts made from nature.

Some of the White House decorations are made from basic and reusable materials, such as wood, newspaper and magazines.

The usual centerpiece of Christmas at the White House is the official tree, one of 19 trees in public areas of the building.

The 18 1/2-foot Douglas fir is anchored to the Blue Room ceiling to keep it from tipping over. Its theme honors county and state fairs, and the tree is decorated with prize ribbons from each state and territory.
Also new is a children's area _ with a tree decorated with gingerbread ornaments and Bo's pipe cleaner replica. The real Bo met the other Bo on Tuesday.

It took less than a week to transform the White House into a Christmas wonderland. Nearly 100 volunteer decorators from around the country flew into town and began working on the decorations the day after Thanksgiving.

In all, more than 100,000 people are expected to tour the White House by the end of the month.

The show format is that of a television talk show for Kids and the first taping is scheduled for Saturday morning, December 4th at 3084 Southern Ave, Memphis, TN 38111.

The first show will be a town hall meeting with a Tri‐State all‐Kids audience formatted for them to share feedback and express ideas and comments about the education of our nation. This subject matter centers around the current Education Nation debates going on. Unfortunately, children have not been afforded the opportunity of a platform to discuss their thoughts on this issue.

MR. DOC SHAW, DISNEY AND TBS STAR, will be interviewed for this taping. The panelist members are made up of adult Education Experts, Youth Group Representatives and children? Adults are also welcome to attend with their Children, but will not be allowed to participate in the audience.

The first show will air in January 2011. Malia and Sasha joins dad for some hoop

The White House says that Malia and Sasha Obama joined their father Sunday morning for some hoop time at the gym inside the building that houses the Interior Department.

On Friday, Obama took an elbow to the mouth while playing a pickup basketball game with friends at Fort McNair. He received 12 stitches to close a cut to the left side of his lower lip.

Obamas Say Their Daughters Prefer To Just Be Kids

It's apparently not a hard choice for Malia and Sasha Obama. President Barack Obama says his 12- and 9-year-old daughters would pick the talking yellow sponge over a talking head any day.
"They are not watching cable TV," he told ABC News in an interview that aired Friday night. "If they have got an option of watching the news or watching SpongeBob, I think it's pretty clear the choice that they are going to make."
The girls can't completely avoid all talk about their father, however. For Malia, he's come up in discussions of current events at school.
"There are issues of the day that come across the conversation. But I have to say that the school is very good about handling it," Michelle Obama said in the joint interview with her husband. "People are very considerate."
Their daughters prefer just to be kids, the Obamas said, and avoid listening to the news or reading newspaper headlines. Sasha still writes letters to Santa Claus and anxiously waits for the Tooth Fairy after she loses a tooth, Mrs. Obama said.
The family prays every night before dinner and Obama said it's interesting to hear what his daughters pray for.
"They'll talk about family and thanking God for blessing us, but they'll always add a little twist: 'I hope we have a great Thanksgiving, I can't wait to see the cousins.' They used to pray for a dog, until we got a dog," Obama said.
"But in the end we always say, 'We hope we live long and strong,'" Michelle Obama added.
"Long and strong," the president echoed.
Asked how he relieves the stress that comes with the job, Obama said two things help the most: exercise and spending time with his kids.
"When you're stressed, they are just ... they're funny, they're smart, they're happy," he said.
"They rock you back into what's important," added the first lady.
Obama said one of the most important things for him in terms of stress reduction "is the fact that if I'm here in Washington, I'm having dinner at 6:30, just about every night and sitting around that table, listening to them, and trying to answer their questions. That keeps my bearings."

Apple and Cider (two turkeys) were driven to the home of George Washington, the nation's first president, in nearby Mount Vernon, Va. For the past five years, the presidentially pardoned turkeys had been sent to Disneyland in California. President Obama and his family delivered two turkeys that did not receive pardons to Martha's Table, a local charity offers meals and other community services. A Pennsylvania turkey farm donated the birds.

The president, his daughters, wife Michelle and her mother, Marian Robinson, and other family and friends passed out turkeys, stuffing and other Thanksgiving staples. It was a return visit for the first family; they worked at the pantry during last year's holiday.

The Obamas will be spending Thanksgiving at the White House.

The White House tradition of turkey pardons is more than six decades old.

The National Turkey Federation says occasional pardons date to the time of President Abraham Lincoln. The modern tradition began in 1947, when President Harry S. Truman accepted a Thanksgiving bird from the organization.

Families will be offered fruit and cookies, among other snacks, a contrast to the M&M's that President Obama gave trick or treaters last year. First Lady Michelle Obama has been campaigning for healthy eating.

It's a party that the president's daughters, Sasha and Malia, have been eagerly awaiting.

When 10-year-old Caroline Beecher of Newton wrote President Obama a letter of congratulations after he was elected, she did not expect that she would meet the president one day.
Caroline and her 5-year-old sister, Grace, were outside during their next-door-neighbor’s private fund-raiser Saturday, waiting with their mother, Karin Beecher. They held up a sign welcoming Obama reading, “Can Malia and Sasha come out and play?’’

President Barack Obama met Friday at the White House with former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice for a chat on foreign policy and her new memoir, officials said.

Rice gave the president a "personalized copy" of "Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family," in which Rice describes her childhood in racially segregated Birmingham, Alabama, a White House spokesman said.

At her meeting with Obama, Rice also gave the president a copy of the young adult version of her memoir for his daughters Sasha and Malia, Vietor said. The book went on sale Tuesday.
