Kids' Concert Added to Inauguration Lineup

By Richard Leiby and Nikita Stewart
Washington Post Staff Writers

It's a young people's inauguration, too. That was the message President-elect Barack Obama relayed yesterday with his inaugural committee's announcement of a free "concert for America's children" on Jan. 19 at Verizon Center.

Other facts were few -- the committee released no names of performers -- but it seems fair to assume that the show might appeal to a demographic that includes girls of a certain age. Say, oh, 10 and 7, which happen to be the respective ages of Michelle and Barack Obama's daughters, Malia and Sasha.

"We don't have anybody confirmed at this point," Presidential Inaugural Committee spokesman Josh Earnest said. And, of course, he wouldn't speculate on whether Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney Channel smash "Hannah Montana," a show that Malia and Sasha are known to enjoy, might be a potential performer.

"I don't know," he said, offering only that the lineup will include "whatever the kids are listening to today."

So let your musical imaginations run wild. The Sippy Cups? Taylor Swift? ? The Jonas Brothers? Rihanna? Fleet Foxes?

Nickelodeon planning first inauguration coverage

The Associated Press
By DAVID BAUDER

NEW YORK (AP) — Nickelodeon TV, the children's' network, is getting ready to cover its first presidential inauguration.

Young reporters Lily Collins, rocker Phil Collins' daughter (photo), and J.J. (Nick would not release his last name) will be in Washington on Jan. 20 to show Barack Obama's inauguration from a pint-sized perspective.

"We decided to carry it through so that kids would have the full experience of the presidential election," said Marva Smalls, executive vice president of public affairs at Nickelodeon. We can't go live in the same way the networks are going live but it will feel the same way to kids," Smalls said.

The station's young viewers are particularly interested in the process because Barack and Michelle Obama's daughters, Malia and Sasha, are squarely in Nick's demographic.

Shen native pens Obama coloring book

TESS GRUBER NELSON, Staff Writer SW Iowa News - Council Bluffs,IA,USA

Malia and Sasha Obama have already been given copies of the coloring books.

When Barack Obama won the Presidential election in November, he incited a feeling in many Americans that anything is possible.

Shenandoah native and children's author, Chris (Offenburger) Walsh took that message even further with a motivational coloring book to commemorate the Inauguration of our 44th President.

Walsh said she didn't want it to only be pictures to color. "The man is so inspirational. He can't say a sentence without inspiring me, so there's a story as well," she said. The coloring book, 11 pages long, tells the tale of Obama growing up with dreams and goals, as well as disappointments. "There's a message throughout the book that all things are possible."
Click here to read the entire story.
The easiest way to obtain a copy of the book is to contact Walsh via her email at cita512@aol.com. Cost of the book is $3. Walsh asks "color book" is placed in the subject line.
Wow! Read Ms. Walsh's comments about our website! We're excited!!!

Chocolate Chunk Cookies for Malia and Sasha

Eurweb.com - Los Angeles,CA,USA

Sales of chocolate chunk cookies at Baby Boomers Café in Des Moines, Iowa have jumped from 400 in a good week to more than 1,000 per week ever since the Obamas expressed affection for the treat. The family visited the place often during the summer of 2007, when the Illinois senator devoted much of his time to Iowa. Obama's main office was next door to Boomers, and his daughters – Malia and Sasha – would stop by with their mother, Michelle. Word got out about the Obamas' chocolate chunk love during a stop in Iowa last month, when his staff ordered about a dozen cookies for the family. Soon, sales jumped with requests coming from as far away as Mexico.
